The Ivy League youth of today have demands.

Very. Serious. Demands.

They want freedom. For Hamas, natch. From the river to the sea, and who knows where after that? Maybe Paris, Paris is nice in the spring, as long as you don't publish cartoons of the Prophet that the faithful don't like. Then they kill you.

They also want Doordash. The Doordash is more for themselves.

(From the rivvvvver! To the seaaaaa! Unreported Truths will be freeeee! Unless you pay for it, so please do. 20 cents a day.)

These two demands came together this week in the person of Johanna King-Slutzky. Yes, even her name is a parody of itself, a Joseph Heller novel in three words. King-Slutzky is a Columbia University graduate student writing a dissertation on "fantasies of limitless energy in the transatlantic Romantic imagination from 1760-1860."

In other words, King-Slutzky is on her way to a long and full life of unemployment, broken for short stretches of jobs supported by compulsory deductions - taxes and union dues. (Per her now-deleted Columbia Web page, she worked as a "a political strategist for leftist and progressive causes and remain[s] active in the higher education labor movement.")

(They all look like this. Why do they all look like this?

ALT: I haven't been so disappointed in a Slutzky since Caroline Ellison!

ALT ALT: She is ROCKING that keffiyeh scarf! Or should that be kaffiyeh? It's like Hanukkah, a holiday I'm guessing King-Slutzky celebrated growing up, you can never tell exactly how to spell it!)

Where was I before King-Slutzky's flowing locks distracted me?

Oh yes, the Columbia protests. Speaking on behalf of the nitwits who had occupied a central building, King-Slutzky demanded the school provision the protestors with water and food.

"Do you want students to die of dehydration and starvation," she said, in all apparent seriousness. "This is like basic humanitarian aid we're asking for."

By then, the protestors had been inside for the building for hours. Hours!

This high-pitched whine was too much even for the assembled reporters. One responded, "It seems like you're saying, "We want to be revolutionaries, we want to take over this building, now would you please bring us some food.""

To which King-Slutzky responded that food was a capitalist construct and food delivery the opium of the masses, and by the way there's this really great Chinese place on 108th and Amsterdam and could somebody please pick her up a double order of the pork and crab soup dumplings, because all this protesting made her hunnnngry?

Nah, she didn't, but she might as well have. She had humiliated herself so thoroughly that the arrival of the New York City Police to end the protest a few hours later must have come as a relief.

Like basic humanitarian aid, I tell ya!

But it isn't just Columbia.

All over this great land, students at America's finest universities are cutting their last weeks of class and getting high in tents protesting the very existence of Jews Israel.

Because colonialism and occupation and genocide. That last one is a particular kick in the teeth, given that Jews faced an actual genocide which some of the real alter kockers* are still alive to remember.

(*Yiddish for oldster.)

Really, what this is all about is being naughty and sticking it to the man.

Defund the police worked out about as well as could be expected, and climate change is so boring. Who wants to protest the weather, anyway? Besides, the California snowpack came roaring back this spring. Atmospheric rivers or whatnot.

So Hamas it is. Let a thousand Palestinian flags fly.

(I pahked my cahh-bomb in Haahvahd Yahd!)

SOURCE

The protestors, and a few of their media compadres, are trying to wrap this spring's nonsense in the mantle of the 1968 protests against the Vietnam War.

The analogy makes total sense, except in every way.

It's not just that the United States isn't fighting in Gaza and no American soldiers are dying there. By the spring of 1968, the United States had largely turned against Vietnam - a war killing up to 500 Americans a week in a country that could not be considered a vital American interest no matter how hard the White House pretended it was.

Famously, on Feb. 27, 1968, CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite, who had just traveled to Vietnam, said that the United States could not win the war. The broadcast supposedly led President Lyndon B. Johnson to say if he had lost Cronkite, he had lost Middle America.

A month later, Johnson said he would not run for reelection. He had won in 1964 in a landslide, but the war and its unpopularity doomed his Presidency, a tragedy that has been well-documented.

So the students in 1968 were genuinely speaking on behalf of a huge swath of Americans who hated the Vietnam War. (Even so, many older Americans turned against the protests when they turned violent over the summer.)

The current protests, on the other hand, feel like a particularly ugly roleplay.

Israel's invasion of Gaza has bogged down and killed too many civilians, but it comes in response to an awful and unprovoked attack on Israeli civilians on Israeli soil. And do these protestors really understand what it means for them to support Hamas - an Islamic fundamentalist terrorist group that is about half-a-degree removed from the butchery of the Islamic State?

(Word salad, word salad.)

Meanwhile the protestors themselves come across as weirdly entitled and weak. If they're so certain of their own righteousness, why do they insist on wearing masks? Why do they whine so whenever anyone challenges them?

As the University of Florida said in a statement after Florida Highway Patrol troopers made several arrests:

The University of Florida is not a daycare and we do not protesters like children — they knew the rules, they broke the rules, and they'll face the consequences.

These protestors aren't the vanguard of a broader social movement. They do not speak for many - much less most - Americans. They represent only themselves.

(Just do it or I'll come to your house with a bullhorn!)

Even the White House appears aware of the risks their antics run to the Democratic Party.

President Biden gave a three-minute speechette this morning to say that "the rule of law must be upheld" and that "order must prevail... it's against the law when violence occurs, destroying property is not a peaceful protest... dissent must never lead to disorder." (Imagine the screaming and gnashing of teeth if Donald Trump had made that simple statement of fact.)

I doubt the younguns care what Grandpa Joe says at this point, though. They're having too good a time.

And the university of illinois is renowned for its physics and computer science programs.

Final (?) update on racist mass murder of cops in Charlotte: two probable shooters in custody—a 17-year-old and the perp’s bee-atch; nnn shuffles the story far back in its 24 minutes of on-air “reporting”

By Grand Rapids Anonymous GRA: Everyone, apparently, had a weapon in negro, Terry Clark Hughes’ residence, as law enforcement attempted to bring Hughes in for various felony warrants. Cops met a barrage from Hughes’ automatic weapon, as he stood in his front yard, during which time Hughes was also eliminated from future police paperwork. Four cops were unfortunately eliminated from further paydays and after Hughes was declared to be in “nig napland,” the shooting continued unabated—from the house. It is unknown yet, how many police were killed by the surviving shooters. Two lowlifes were taken in as “persons of interest” (chuckle). No one in media was interested enough to ask how many police were killed or shot by Hughes and how many by his woman and kid. nnn pushed the story far back in the program, declaring Trump being fined $9,000, “with a possibility of jail time,” the “campus crazies” story, the weather and Prince Charles’ cancer, being more important. However, if a White had pulled this off against black cops (say in NYC), you’d have had 15 minutes of in-depth coverage. They did show Hughes’ mug for 4 seconds, one of the longer times onscreen for a black murderer. Heads will probably roll for that mistake (“White” heads, if there are any left at nbc). --GRA Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 11:56:00 PM EDT

“Shenandoah”: Hear Two Very Different Versions by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra

By Nicholas Stix

I advise against watching the first video, while listening to it. It’s an exquisite choral performance from the album, God Bless America: 23 Patriotic Favorites, originally cut in 1965, and re-cut in 1992. The poster, however, posted a video of the MTC singing the same song—with a much inferior, monotonous arrangement from 2014. (And yet, the inferior version is still moving!) Thus, if you watch the video to the 1965 version, you’ll be jarred by the visual and audio being out of sync.

(Some listeners used to perfect pitch, like “W,” might be tempted to run into the street shooting at everyone from the jarring mismatch!)

I tried a different page of the 1965 version, without the video, but the sound quality was inferior.

That 1965 version is so exquisite that I thought of the sort of choral arrangements Ken Darby (1909-1992) did for pictures with Al Newman at 20th Centruy Fox Studio (e.g., How the West was Won, 1962), with layers and different verses ending with different musical emphases (e.g., hitting now, the second, and now the third beat in “Missouri”).

As beautiful as the female voices are, the men dominate, and that is how it must be. Whoever arranged and conducted the 2014 version gave the females parity, and that’s one of the reasons it stinks.

Shenandoah
“Written by: Bob Dylan (arr.)”

[Bob Dylan had absolutely nothing to do with writing “Shenandoah,” and this was not some web site whose proprietor engaged in “chipping” from other sites, and slapping the name of a pop singer in place of a composer, but his personal Web page, bobdylan.com. In any event, it’s much closer to the version sung by the MTC than that which we’re told was sung by the MTC.]

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, you rollin’ river,
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, we’re bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.

Now the Missouri is a mighty river,
Away, you rollin’ river,
Indians camp along her border,
Away, we’re bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.

Well a white man loved an Indian maiden,
Away, you rollin’ river,
With notions his canoe was laden,
Away, we’re bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.

Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter,
Away, you rollin’ river,
It was for her I’d cross the water,
Away, we’re bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.

For seven long years I courted Sally,
Away, you rollin’ river,
Seven more years I longed to hold her,
Away, we’re bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.

Well, it’s fare-thee-well, my dear,
I’m bound to leave you,
Away, you rollin’ river,
Shenandoah, I will not deceive you,
Away, we’re bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.

Comments I left at youtube:

3 weeks ago I love the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra so deeply. Go ahead, ask me what I love most about it! Whatever I just heard. That would make “Shenandoah” my all-time favorite song from them.

I’ve heard the MTC sing dozens of songs, and always found their performances impeccable. And yet, with “Shenandoah,” they took it up a notch. While I find the arrangement here for the orchestra less than perfect—at times grand, at times not—this is the most exquisite choral performance by any group of any song I’ve ever heard. What is it about this song that inspires so many of the world’s greatest singers to do their best work—Jo Stafford, Harve Presnell, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Liam Clancy, Sissell? They must have found it a deeply religious song.

Which he was and still is.

Flowers for a Working Girl
By Nicholas Stix

“Flowers for a Working Girl” was the original title this essay ran under on May 17, 1996

May 17, 1996
Straight Talk

As I write this, Gayle Hoffman is clinging to life in Jamaica Hospital’s ICU. Who is Gayle Hoffman? “Nobody.” Somebody.

On March 26th, Gayle gained four new orifices she hadn’t bargained on. According to detectives in Far Rockaway’s 101 Precinct, the holes were courtesy of an off-duty, drunken NYPD rookie who’d just graduated from the Academy five days before.

Officer Rolando Hernandez has since been charged with attempted murder and assault. The shooting occurred on Beach 28th Street and Seagirt Avenue, Gayle’s territory. Rolando Hernandez allegedly pumped four 9 mm slugs from his service weapon into Gayle’s neck, lung, arm and leg. On the street, a girl who claimed she was with her insists that Hernandez shot Gayle after she stole $600 in cash from him. She’ll never “stroll” again, and it’s a miracle she’s still alive.

I hadn’t known her last name. We first met early last fall. Coming from the subway late, I was heading down Beach 20th Street. Two big, young [Hispanic] men who seemed to have ideas of “getting paid” were closing in on me.

Having gotten my nose broken fighting off a Mutt-and-Jeff team on the A train just a couple of weeks before and been arrested for “possession of a noxious substance” for spraying “Jeff” with tear gas, I was feeling war-weary. Seeing a woman standing at the bus stop on the other side of the street, by the corner of Seagirt, I crossed over. Strength in numbers, and all that.

Cute and short, pale, but well-nourished with dark hair, Gayle introduced herself: “You are talking to the most notorious prostitute in Far Rockaway.”

The next time I saw her, she was in a less affable mood. At 3 a.m., I escorted my building’s security guard to a stairwell door on the top floor, where he rousted her out of the sleep of the dead. She cursed him, as he ushered her out of the building. Homeless and strung out, she was just looking for a nook or cranny to crash in.

How could she be homeless? She who bragged, “I don’t even talk about a b--- j— for less than $20”? Neighbors said she was a crackhead who gave everything to her muse.

The next time I saw Gayle she was in my building during midday, when there’s no security. She apologized, “I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you.” It might have only been good policy for a potential John, but hey, how many people in this town have even that much business sense? I responded, “No sweat.” I hadn’t taken her curses personally.

The last time I saw her was on Everdell Avenue, during Chanukah. I was taking the short cut to the subway by the most notorious crackhouse in town (though not the only one on the block), which was later cleaned out in the big spring sweep. I’ve often been approached by ladies on Everdell, trudging even through blizzards to fill an unquenchable need.

Gayle wished me a “gut yomtov” in passing. A funny duck, when she spoke she looked not at me, but at a street guy who didn’t look too Jewish. So, funny duck that I am, I didn’t return the greeting.

Better late than never. Sorry, Gayle. Gut yomtov.

Postscript, April 29, 2024

Another rumor I heard on the street in Far Rockaway, was that Rolando Hernandez had shot Gayle when she laughed at his inability to get it up, due to being extremely high. (I just confirmed this, via a newspaper report of her testimony at Rolando Hernandez’ trial.)

In any event, Hernandez was completely unfit to be a cop, and I’m sure had red flags that would have turned up during any sort of background check, like his street criminal friends he spent the days with between graduating from the police academy and shooting Gayle.

In March 1997, Rolando Hernandez was convicted of attempted murder, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. But he left Gayle a quadriplegic, unable to use any of her limbs.

She lived out her days in a nursing home, requiring constant care—diapering, being turned in bed, so as to protect her from bed sores, feeding, meds, everything.

She couldn’t even swallow, and required suction so that she wouldn’t choke to death on her own saliva or mucous.

Well, someone neglected her suction one night, while she was asleep. She choked to death.

I don’t know what it says on her death certificate, but Gayle’s cause of death was homicide, through Rolando Hernandez.

(I’ve known numerous murder victims over the years, whose cause of death didn’t match what it said on their toe tags. I’ve even kissed a couple goodbye on their foreheads.)

Queens DA Richard Brown spoke in 2004 of possibly re-opening Gayle’s case, and charging Hernandez with murder, but it was just talk. DA Brown let the matter drop, and the MSM forgot all about it. And the NYCPD got to maintain its pretty homicide stats.

Gayle’s parents had some money, and I read somewhere that they founded a charity in her name. (They sued the city of New York for letting Hernandez become a cop, but I have no idea how that suit panned out.)
