Evansville police are investigating an early-morning shooting on Friday that left one person injured.

Authorities identified the injured man as 39-year-old Burt Bender. Bender was shot once in the abdomen. He is expected to survive, according to an Evansville Police Department news release.

The incident happened about 1:45 a.m. on Friday near the intersection of Adams and Kentucky avenues. Bender told investigators he was walking home when a group of black men in a red Pontiac car approached him.

Bender, who is white, told police that the men in the car yelled several racial slurs at him before one of them shot him, according to the department news release.

Evansville Police Department Sgt. Jason Cullum said investigator don't think Bender knew any of the men in the car that approached him. That vehicle has not been located. Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call 812-436-7979 or WeTip at 1-800-78-CRIME.

Police in Evansville are investigating the death of a man a witness said was shot following a verbal altercation with a man in a vehicle.

Officers responded to a shots fired call near the intersection of Garvin and Walnut streets around 3:23 a.m. Police found a man lying in the street who was not breathing.

Eric Steven Brookins, 24, of Evansville, sustained at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at Deaconess Hospital. An autopsy by the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Officer revealed Brookins died from a single gunshot wound to the heart.

A person who was with Brookins told police that someone in a passenger car yelled at them as they were riding bicycles. The witness told police that Brookins and a man in the car got into an altercation before a gunshot was fired from the vehicle. Police have not said which direction the bicyclists were traveling.

According to police, the weapon used in the shooting is a semi-automatic handgun.

Authorities are working to identify the shooter. He was described as a black male. The witness described the vehicle as possibly a red Ford.

Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to call EPD at 436-7979 or WeTip at 1-800-78-CRIME.

This is a developing story, please check back later for more updates.

Could be anywhere in the country. They are very mobile and money does not seem to be an object.

This is similar to the MO of the Zebra killers in San Fran from decades ago. Cruise and then at whim just kill.

I am sickened by this and other similar story when I think of what could happen to our children, grandchildren. Our own lives have become fragile and vulnerable when we have a government that works against us. The entitlements have become more brazen, emboldened by the administration. God help us. Thank you Nick for exposing what the main stream media hides.
