The New Batman-Superman Adventures (1997-2000) Opening Theme (and the Myth of Danny Elfman)

Revised at 11:22 p.m., on April 1, 2013

I used to watch this series with my boy when he was just a toddler, with this opening. The dark Gotham City/Metropolis, the laughing, sadistic heavies, bass line, strings of despair, and heroic horns in the opening thrilled me so that I remember it better than the series itself.

The show was a combination of re-runs from two animated kids’ TV series: Superman (1996-2000) and The New Batman Adventures (1997-1999).

I recall enjoying the Superman episodes (can’t recall any Batman stories), though being puzzled that there were apparently no white people in Metropolis. All of the characters, even Lois Lane, were colored light brown.

I’d always heard that the composer was Shirley Walker. Now, some self-appointed “experts” claim it was Danny Elfman. Although I love Elfman’s work, there is no basis for this claim.

Walker and at least two other composers worked on The New Batman Adventures: Lolita Ritmanis and Michael McCuistion. According to IMDB, all three were nominated for Emmys for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition in 1999, each for a separate episode of the New Batman Adventures.

Unfortunately, although IMDB has a “complete cast and crew” link for this show, it is incomplete. However, it does clearly state that Shirley Walker composed the theme. And it does not cite Elfman at all. Granted, IMDB is far from perfect, but it is still much more reliable than The Pretend Encyclopedia, aka Wikipedia, which lists Elfman as one of the show’s composers, and which is doubtless the source for those “experts” citing him.

A check under Elfman’s name at IMDB shows that he composed the theme for an earlier cartoon series entitled simply Batman, which ran from 1992-1995.

Ah, but how do we know the opening theme to The New Batman-Superman Adventures wasn’t from the Superman half? Because the legendary Shirley Walker composed the themes for both shows! The only possible alternative is that IMDB completely blew it. More likely, the “experts” confused the earlier Batman series with the later one.

John Ziegler and Joe Paterno

By David in TN

[To N.S.:] Have you followed any of the John Ziegler-Joe Paterno-Jerry Sandusky contratemps?

Ziegler is a self-described conservative/libertarian who has been a long-time critic of the MSM, whom he accuses of unfairly maligning the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

The Sandusky child molestation case and trial, unlike what is covered at NSU/WEJB, got enormous attention, in large part by bringing Paterno's name into it.

Ziegler got the bright idea of interviewing Sandusky for his proposed film. He went on the Today show with excerpts. Ziegler seemed surprised that Sandusky didn't think he did anything wrong (admittedly chasing young boys around the shower room and rubbing soap on them).

Now if Ziegler wants to do a film about the MSM and their reaction (or lack of) to crime stories, wouldn't a film about the Knoxville Horror be a good idea? Would it even occur to him?

By the way, the CEO of Sandusky's Second Mile Foundation, one Jack Raykovitz, knew Sandusky had been accused at least twice of molestation but continued to send him out with young boys until 2008. Raykovitz is a trained child psychologist and a mandated reporter. The MSM is not interested in him, but they couldn't get enough of Sandusky being Paterno's long-time defensive coordinator.

Protecting CUNY Reform

By Nicholas Stix

The column below appeared pseudonymously in the New York Post on June 28, 1998, under the title, “How to Make Change Real.” It was the second part of a page devoted to guest op-ed columns under the title, “CUNY’S ROCKY ROAD TO REFORM.” The top column, “The Tone-Deaf Trustees,” was written by Michael Meyers, the head of the New York Civil Rights Coalition (NYCRC).

As far as I know, none of my proposals was adopted.

I submitted the article pseudonymously, because I was then teaching on various City University of New York (CUNY) campuses, and using my own name would have been professional suicide. I didn’t tell the editors at the Post who I really was, because they wouldn’t have run any of my articles, or would have forced me to use my own name.

Why would newspapermen, who have the protection of full-time jobs at a powerful institution force a part-time whistle-blower to write under his own name? Good question. I’d love to hear the newspapermen try and answer it with a straight face.

My manuscript below runs 946 words, which is at least 100 words longer than the version the Post ran, but the Post appears to have maintained its integrity.

This was not the first of the four pseudonymous op-eds I published in the Post, but it was the first for which I could find the manuscript on a floppy, so as to save me the trouble of having to transcribe the text off an old photocopy.

How to Make Change Real
By Robert Berman

On May 26, the CUNY Board of Trustees voted to phase out remediation at CUNY's four-year colleges over three years, shifting this responsibility to community colleges, but not before 24 "demonstrators" had to be arrested. In 1970, intimidation and politicization brought about the institution of open admissions and massive remediation; they have been central in fighting reform ever since. Hence, I believe that it will take more than a Trustees' vote to ensure reform.

Prior to 1970, CUNY provided an advanced education to the talented citizen-scholars who, regardless of social standing, [would later run] ran the city's agencies and taught its children. In transforming CUNY into Remedial U., the University's stewards saw its students as clients. If CUNY is to return to preeminence, its anti-intellectual, dependency orientation must change. Some suggestions follow for improving four of CUNY's many problem areas.

English as a Second Language (ESL). CUNY presently has two sets of competing ESL programs; those administered by campus English departments, and those of the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP). While campus ESL helps exhaust students' financial aid grants (which may net a student $4,000-6,000 per year, after paying the $3,200 tuition) long before they graduate, CLIP does not affect aid eligibility, and costs only $10 per week. Requiring a 25-hour-per-week commitment, CLIP classes are intense, disciplined, and results-driven. The stacks of CLIP essays I have read were typically much better than those by students in advanced campus classes who had been socially promoted from campus ESL to remedial English to "college-level" English, while remaining strangers to the language. Campus ESL students may spend twelve hours per week in soft ESL classes, while taking "college-level" classes of questionable value to maintain their financial aid eligibility. As CLIP does not disburse financial aid, it effectively discourages those who are not serious about academics. All campus-based ESL programs should be eliminated, and all ESL students directed to CLIP.

Financial aid. Some campuses check attendance rosters before disbursing financial aid, but others don't. This practice should be made universal. Better still, would be for CUNY to return -- with the agreement of the feds and Albany -- to its pre-1976 practice of neither charging city residents tuition nor providing them financial aid. Reform opponents argue that 70 percent of today's CUNY students work (primarily part-time); prior to open admissions, the number was closer to 100 percent. Night classes are full of exhausted yet diligent students who work full-time, often have children, and pay for their classes through their tuition, and again through their taxes. Conversely, too many day classes are dominated by well-rested, unmotivated students who work little, pay no taxes, and whose tuition is paid by the taxpayers. This inequity must end.

Eliminating tuition and financial aid would rid us of a large, well-paid, non-academic bureaucracy. At the very least, social work programs for students such as "SEEK" should be done away with. CUNY's practice of hiring well-paid, full-time "counselors," while exploiting adjunct professors makes painfully obvious wherein it sees its mission.

Faculty. The majority (58.3 percent and growing) of CUNY professors are "adjuncts" who are treated as part-timers, no matter how many classes they teach. Few earn $20,000 per year. In contrast, full-time professors average a $60,000 salary, and have wonderful medical and pension plans, for seven months of work.

The city owes the adjuncts a tremendous debt. Again, CLIP offers a possible blueprint for paying off that debt. CLIP instructors work eight months out of the year, have benefits, and earn app. $36,000. CUNY could spend the money saved from defunct dependency and financial aid programs on hiring adjuncts as full-timers. The "part-time professor" must again become the exception, rather than the rule.

Meanwhile, CUNY should also eliminate tenure. Rather than shielding holders of unpopular notions, tenure protects incompetents, while functioning as an unconstitutional political litmus test excluding those holding politically incorrect views. The First Amendment and Professional Staff Congress exist to protect unpopular faculty beliefs.

Curriculum reform. Many "disciplines" exist for political reasons alone. Among these are the "identity" programs: black, women's, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Italian, Judaic, gay studies, etc. These departments should all be shut down. Their tenured faculty can then be "grandfathered" into traditional disciplines, until they retire.

The most problematic discipline of all is that of education. Over 80 percent of New York public school teachers are products of CUNY's teacher ed programs. Economist Thomas Sowell has noted that the ranks of teachers and teacher ed professors alike are dominated by the lowest 25 percent of academic achievers. And the theories! Every discredited notion for teaching children is at home in teacher's ed: self-esteem ed, bilingual ed, sex ed, death ed, whole language, etc. As critic Rita Kramer has noted, these theories have exacerbated the very problems they purport to solve. And it is knowledge of such tendentious theories, as opposed to say, knowledge of history or physics, that is crucial in passing teacher certification tests.

Future teachers still need to observe veterans in the classroom. However, Albany willing, this can be arranged through campus liaison offices, without education departments. Meanwhile, disciplinary requirements need to be beefed up from 30 to 45 or 60 credits in undergraduate disciplines, so that teachers will know something about the fields they teach, rather than being self-esteem and safe sex scholars. The Regents' new reform plan stresses discipline-based knowledge. Unfortunately, it also goes in the other extreme, in making teachers study more "educational" pseudo-knowledge, and ultimately will expand teacher ed programs.

If we do not eliminate programs and practices that have long depressed standards, and repelled talented and ambitious students, we will find that remediation reform has merely changed CUNY's campus student distribution, but not its heart and soul.•

Giuliani over Muhammad, in a Knockout

By Nicholas Stix
October 12, 1998
Insight on the News

What if they had a riot, and no one came? On September 5 in Harlem, black Islamic radical Khalid Muhammad sought to incite a riot on the occasion of the “Million Youth March,” which he organized and led.

Muhammad, you may recall, is the man Minister Louis Farrakhan threw out of the Nation of Islam for being too radical. Among other directives, Muhammad told marchers, “And if you don’t have a gun, every one of them [New York City cops] has one gun, two guns, three guns. In self-defense, if they attack you, take their guns from them and use their guns on them. Don’t let nobody be arrested.”

A few hours later, however, it was apparent that Muhammad is not Stokely Carmichael and this was no sixties-era venue. Following Muhammad’s orders, a few of the 6,000 participants did indeed attack police with steel railings. Although 15 police officers were injured (many were pelted with stones and bottles), only one marcher was arrested. Minutes after the march officially shut down, you’d never know that these same police had just averted a bloodbath. In fact, outside of New York, the march was largely a nonevent, due partly to Muhammad’s inept organizing but more directly because of Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s mental toughness.

In today’s increasingly “wag-the-dog” style of followership, elected officials tend to take their cues from a consensus of community leaders when the smell of race war is in the air. The Gospel According to Giuliani reads differently. Hizzoner, who has cross-dressed on national TV and been accused of being a closet Democrat, is the anti-Clinton. A few weeks ago, when Muhammad called for the September 5 march in Harlem and made oblique threats of a violent clash, there was no public consensus among New York’s black leaders about what stance to take. Giuliani waited one week for any prominent black leader to denounce the march. When they didn’t, he did.

Calling the planned gathering a “hate march,” Giuliani refused to grant Muhammad and Co. a parade permit. Arguing that residential Harlem was an inappropriate venue for a 30-block parade route and potentially more than 1 million marchers, the mayor offered alternative sites and made it clear that unlawful behavior would not be tolerated.

In grave apocalyptic tones, Muhammad and his associates, Malik Zulu Shabazz and Erica Ford, promised that they would march in Harlem, “permit or no permit.” They sued in federal court and got a permit. But on September 1, an appeals court limited the permitted space to six Harlem blocks and the time from noon to 4 p.m.

After the mayor denounced Muhammad, black city leaders followed suit: State comptroller Carl McCall, Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields, Harlem State Assemblyman Herman “Denny” Farrel and former Rep. Floyd Flake - Democrats all - publicly opposed the march. Once Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled in favor of the march, many of the above-named politicians prudently decided on a middle course of denouncing Muhammad and praising young people who sought to air their concerns peacefully. After the crisis was averted, Fields, along with some of the same officials, claimed that the police had overreacted, and had even provoked the violence. No surprise here: They were once again railing against Mr. Law and Order, whose hard-nosed police policies are perceived by many black New Yorkers as thinly veiled racism.

Since getting elected mayor in a city with a 5-1 ratio of Democrat to Republican voters, former U.S. attorney Giuliani has taken on a host of seemingly intractable issues - violent crime, welfare, higher education, quality-of-life violations (such as subway-fare cheats) - and given New Yorkers their best sense of hope since Mayor John Lindsay’s welfare revolution nearly 30 years ago. Every step of the way Giuliani has made enemies. His critics - black and white - routinely compare him to Hitler. He seems to accept such enmity as the cost of doing business, and at times to revel in it. In contrast, Giuliani’s socialist predecessor, David N. Dinkins, was elected as a “racial healer,” and assiduously avoided confrontations. Yet, oddly enough, the Dinkins administration was plagued by violent, racist “boycotts,” murderous pogroms and drug-dealer-led riots.

What Dinkins and so many other urban leaders since the sixties have failed to understand is that the threat of a riot requires a swift, authoritarian response. Order must be maintained, whether in the streets of Harlem, in the ticket line at a rock concert or at the entrance to an overcrowded toy store on Christmas Eve.

Hizzoner was the clear winner of the showdown on Sept. 5, but so also were New York’s black leaders, the people of Harlem - and especially the young people who elected not to show up.

Lawrence Auster: January 26, 1949 - March 29, 2013

Lawrence Auster lecturing

By Nicholas Stix

Laura Wood has published a worshipful obituary at Larry Auster’s blog.

Auster worked heroically in his last months, pouring out an incredible amount of work, while in a terrible state. I’ve heard that pancreatic cancer is particularly painful, though I can’t imagine any kind of cancer that isn’t.

Larry played a distinctive role in the culture of American anarcho-tyranny. I’ll have much more to say about that, in a living obituary I started a few weeks ago, when I thought I had more time, though a close advisor warned me that time was very short.

Auster’s funeral will be taking place in Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 2.

When I saw mention of his funeral, I considered going, even though we weren’t close, assuming that the service would be in Manhattan, or at least somewhere in New York City, but Philadelphia is a bridge too far. I wasn’t aware that he had a connection to Philly. Then again, Larry kept his personal life very close to the vest, as well he needed to.

I just checked Google News for reports of Larry’s death. The lone hit was for a blog by my VDARE editor, Peter Brimelow. Ain’t that a kick in the head? But should I even be surprised?

However, a check of Google “Web” listings for the “past 24 hours” turned up no fewer than nine full pages of blogs, with very few duplicate entries, reporting on Auster’s death.

Byron York: Democrats set to jam immigration reform through Senate
@ByronYork

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., left, speaks to the media as, from second left, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sen. Michael Bennett, D-Colo., and Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., listen in during a news conference after their tour of the Mexico border with the United States on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, in Nogales, Ariz. The senators are part of a larger group of legislators shaping and negotiating details of an immigration reform package vowed Wednesday to make the legislation public when Congress reconvenes next month.

Given the enormity of the changes that would result from comprehensive immigration reform, Senate Democrats wouldn't try to rush a bill through the Judiciary Committee before the public gets a chance to know what's in it -- would they?

In the past few days, even though proposed reform legislation from the so-called Gang of Eight hasn't even been written, there have been strong indications that that's exactly what Democrats intend to do.

More than a week ago, most of the Republican members of the committee wrote a letter to Chairman Patrick Leahy asking that the panel take its time considering a reform proposal. It took years, and a hundred hearings, and hundreds of witnesses, to reach an agreement when reform was last passed in the 1980s, the senators argued. This time, the committee shouldn't hurry a bill through committee in a few weeks.

Among other requests, the GOP senators asked for the chance to question Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The Judiciary Committee's last Homeland Security oversight hearing was in April 2012, they noted, and Napolitano still hasn't answered follow-up questions from that session. Now, especially since Napolitano has clearly voiced her opposition to GOP border security demands, it seems logical that she would appear before the committee considering reform.

The Republican letter carried a certain amount of weight because it was signed by six of the eight GOP members of the committee: ranking member Charles Grassley, John Cornyn (the number-two Republican in the Senate), Orrin Hatch, Jeff Sessions, Mike Lee, and Ted Cruz. The other two Republicans on the committee, Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake, are part of the Gang of Eight.

If the GOP lawmakers hoped to receive a quiet, well-reasoned response from Leahy, they were certainly disappointed. In a letter to Sessions laced with pique, personal invective and an unmistakable air of fuggedaboudit, Leahy told committee Republicans what they can do with their concerns.

First, he complained that Sessions had not spoken to him directly. Then he accused Sessions of grandstanding for the press. And then he complained about the way Republicans treated Democrats when the GOP held the Senate majority before 2007. And that was just in the first paragraph.

More substantially, Leahy suggested the Judiciary Committee has already done enough talking about immigration reform. There were lots of hearings on the subject back in 2006, he said, and a few in the past couple of months. Although there is no bill to evaluate yet -- "I regret that we do not have a legislative proposal before us," Leahy said -- the chairman strongly suggested he sees little need for further discussion.

So when the Gang of Eight bill is finished, Leahy declared, it will be considered "with all deliberate speed." After it is introduced in committee, Republicans will be allowed to delay consideration by one week (a standard prerogative of the minority party). After that, there will be no more hearings, no extended discussion of the bill's provisions. Voting on amendments and then a final committee vote will soon follow.

"I hope it is not your intention to discredit the process we undertake in the Judiciary Committee before we begin," Leahy wrote Sessions. "Artificial delays, delays for delays' sake [have] tainted too much of the Senate's work over the last few years."

Leahy's timetable left Republicans slack-jawed. Said one GOP aide: "The suggestion that you are going to create a new guest worker program, new border security protocols, new interior enforcement protocols, change worksite rules, future flow of immigrants, family migration, every category of visas, high-skill workers, low-skill workers, an entry system, an exit system, a tracking system, and on top of that consider the complex legal and economic concerns relating to legalizing an untold number of people who are currently here illegally ?-- the idea that you're going to do that in a couple of weeks is --" At that point, the aide stopped, unable to come up with a word to describe such an undertaking.

But Sessions didn't stop, declaring, "No member of Congress who believes in democratic procedure can acquiesce to the ramming through of a thousand-page bill that will dramatically and directly impact the taxes, wages, and security of our constituents."

Will Leahy be able to push the bill as quickly as he hopes? It's not clear. Sen. Marco Rubio, working with the Gang of Eight, has often expressed his desire for full hearings and public consideration. But Democrats control the Senate, and if Leahy wants to fast-track a bill through his committee, and is willing to use all his powers, he can get what he wants.

The Trayvon Martin Hoax: Is George Zimmerman's Lawyer Mark O'Mara in the Tank, or Has He Simply Surrendered?

George Zimmerman's lead defense attorney, Mark O'Mara

Post #106 on the Trayvon Martin Hoax

By Nicholas Stix

My colleague David in TN has sent me an article, from The Last Refuge.

It seems that George Zimmerman’s defense attorney Mark O’Mara has been working the pro-hoax media, including CNN and BET, trying to win some sort of award for being the most pc, dishonest attorney in Florida.

George Zimmerman's older brother, Robert

Mug shot of 17-year-old accused Georgia baby-killer, De’Marquise Elkins

O'Mara's newest shtick was in seeking to counteract some non-pc tweets by George’s steadfast brother Robert, who had set up an equivalence between Trayvon Martin and 17-year-old black accused baby-killer De’Marquise Elkins, by sitting down for an interview with The Daily Beast, in which O’Mara depicted Robert as a racist Cain, to George’s non-racist Abel.
O’Mara tells George’s Dad not to talk to the media... O’Mara tells George that no-one should talk to the media... And O’Mara says this:

“I don’t know what was in his [Robert's] heart, but his words and his tweets tend to just rip people apart,” O’Mara said. “To tie someone like Trayvon Martin to a person who seems to have committed a heinous murder, just because they share a common trait of being black and having fingers, is wholly inappropriate. It allows people to start calling each other racists again.”
Even if you are not a racial socialist, as the recent history of the Republican Party has shown, if you emasculate yourself and play by racial socialism’s rules, the racial socialists will always win.

Pittsburgh: Target Stabbing Suspect Leon Raymond Walls, 41, is a Psychopathic Drifter with a History of Murder

Attempted murder victim Allison Meadows—the first of four

Suspect Leon Raymond Walls

[Previously, on this mope, at WEJB/NSU:

“Pittsburgh: Homeless Black Fugitive Leon Raymond Walls, 41, Slashed and Stabbed Four Victims, Mostly Men Who Came to the Aid of the White Girl He was Trying to Murder”; and

“Pittsburgh: Target Attempted Murder Suspect Leon Raymond Walls, 41, Has Identical Name, and is the Same Age as Suspect in 1991 Los Angeles Robbery-Murder.”]

Posted by Nicholas Stix

Yesterday, I re-posted a 1991 Los Angeles Times article about a 19-year-old thug named Leon Raymond Walls, who had committed robbery and murder in L.A., and asked if that was the same mug who tried to murder several people in a Target in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty section. The answer is, yes.

Walls and his crime partner, Bryant Jerome Clark, 18, had robbed a couple, Louis Roldan, 45, and his fiancé, Hilda Blackburn, 47. Roldan was veteran “reserve police officer” (auxiliary?), and drew his gun, to defend himself and his fiancé. Unfortunately, Roldan missed his intended target, Clark, and instead hit and killed his fiancé.

However, since Blackburn was killed as a result of the robbery, that made her death felony murder. But instead of real punishment, all Walls got was an eight-year visit to the Graybar Hotel for “voluntary manslaughter and robbery.” In spite of an additional, prison charge of battery, by 1999, he was again a free man.

Then there’s an approximately 12-year gap in charges. Since a man like Leon Raymond Walls is a walking, talking crime machine, whether he’s inside or out, that time would have been a history of thousands of violent crimes, unless he was heavily medicated in a mental hospital, in which case it might only be a history of hundreds of violent crimes.

As I recently noted regarding another psychopathic drifter, Deanne Ostbye, these sorts of criminals get a pass for an awful lot of minor crimes, and get not-so-minor crimes downgraded to piddling misdemeanors, which are then typically expunged. However, they don’t become inactive.

Liz Navratil reports below,

When he was arrested in Pittsburgh, Walls was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service on a probation violation stemming from an assault in Washington, D.C. Walls was charged with simple assault after he jumped on a man at a homeless shelter on Aug. 4, 2011, began to strike him with his fist and then bit him on the head, according to a police report.

If not for biting the other guy on the head, Walls would probably not have done more than a night in the cooler. He must have drawn blood.

We seem to have more and more psychopathic drifters on our streets.

Now, open borders supporters will point to the fact that Deanne Ostbye, cop-killer Eriese Tisdale (whom I wrote about in the same VDARE column as Ostbye), and Walls are all home-grown psychos, as if that were an argument for never-ending, mass, Third World immigration. Actually, the opposite is the case. Ostbye, Tisdale, and Walls are all home-grown Third Worlders. Such populations (blacks and Hispanics) have frequencies of violence many times higher than whites do. And this has nothing to do with “poverty.” Poor white areas are typically safer for people of all races than wealthy areas are. As some Internet wags point out, West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the union, is almost all white, and yet has about the lowest crime rate.

We’re in the midst of a depression, and have ever more wandering psychos on our streets. Meanwhile, we’re so broke that not only do we not have the money to pay for ever more prison and mental hospital space, but we’re releasing felons, to save money.

The more Third Worlders we import, the more such psychopaths we will have, both absolutely and proportionally. If we’re going to import anyone, it should be the whites being subjected to genocide on the installment plan in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Suspect in East Liberty Target stabbings has criminal history
Girl, 16, recovering from collapsed lung in attack
By Liz Navratil
March 27, 2013 12:02 am
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The homeless man accused of going on a stabbing spree in the East Liberty Target store has a criminal history that stretches across the nation and includes convictions on charges that he bit a man on the head and aided in a robbery that led to a woman's death.

Leon Raymond Walls, 41, remained in the Allegheny County Jail on Tuesday while the most seriously injured victim in Monday's stabbing -- a 16-year-old girl from Tennessee -- recovered surprisingly well, delighting her friends and family members.

Pittsburgh Zone 5 Cmdr. Timothy O'Connor, whose officers are leading the investigation, said police do not yet know why Walls attacked people in and near the Target store or why he was in town.

"Why he did this would only be speculation," the commander said. "It was fortunate that no one died in this incident and that he was detained and taken into custody."

Walls was arrested shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Monday after witnesses told police that he stabbed a man in the arm near Highland News and then ran into the Target store, where he stabbed Allison Meadows, of Chattanooga.

He also slashed the lips and fingers of men who tried to subdue him until officers arrived and used pepper spray and a Taser to stop him, police said.

Walls earned himself a criminal record in California and Washington, D.C.
He served a sentence for voluntary manslaughter and robbery at Mule Creek State Prison between July 1991 and June 1999, according to Bill Sessa, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Court records show that Walls and another man were initially charged with murdering Hilda Blackburn and robbing her and a man named Louis Roldan. The murder charge was later downgraded.

While Walls was in prison, he was charged with battery, Mr. Sessa said.

It's not clear how or when Walls made it to Pittsburgh. But his presence here was impossible to ignore on Monday evening.

Michael Turner, 48, of East Liberty, said he and his cousin Roland Smith and friend Jobe Wright were standing near Highland News not far from the Target store when Walls came up behind him and stabbed Mr. Wright for no apparent reason.

"He was deranged-like," Mr. Turner said. "You could just see it in his eyes. Something wasn't right."

Tyrique Walker, 22, of Penn Hills, was feeding a parking meter when he saw the stabbing and watched Walls run toward the Target. Mr. Wright, Mr. Smith and Mr. Turner followed behind him, one of them carrying a baseball bat -- a scene that prompted someone in the area to call 911.

Mr. Walker said he alerted store security and then went into the bathroom, working on the theory that a man who had just stabbed someone would likely want to change his clothes.

Walls rushed out of the bathroom with a knife. A store security guard ran the opposite way, witnesses said, and Walls began to weave in and out of cashiers' aisles.

At some point in the mayhem, he grabbed 16-year-old Allison Meadows, placed his arm around her neck, dragged her and then stabbed her in the back, collapsing her lung, police and witnesses said.

Allison held hands with her friend Chelsey Stokes, who engaged in tug-of-war with Walls, Ms. Stokes told KDKA-TV.

A man, later identified as Hosea Davis, 36, of Wilkinsburg, jumped into the mix and helped free Allison from Walls.

"He was like Superman," Mr. Turner said. "All I've seen is this little guy flying in the air."

The men struggled to stop Walls and the frenzy continued into a nearby aisle full of medical supplies.

"None of us knew each other," Mr. Walker said. "It was just like we'd seen this happening. We had to get this guy out of the streets. Once I seen him grab this little girl, I just realized that he didn't have no remorse."

Police arrived and medics transported Allison to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where she had planned to visit a relative and from where she was sending out messages on Twitter about her recovery Monday night. Mr. Wright, Mr. Smith and Mr. Turner were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

A spokeswoman for Target said the company wishes Allison's family well and takes security seriously.

Cmdr. O'Connor said he is considering nominating the men who helped Allison for honors.

Mr. Turner, who takes blood-thinning medication, said that despite the risk, his decision to help Allison was a simple one: "I can't afford to get cut or stabbed or shot or anything because I'll bleed to death. I just wanted to save that little girl."

We Need a Rating System for Border Security!

For want of a denominator - a nation was lost?

Is border security a 10, or just a 2? Why lawmakers want a rating system
By Glenn Spencer
March 26, 2013
Christian Science Monitor

Glenn Spencer gave Rep. Barber his plan for the border at this Jan. 28 meeting in Douglas, Arizona.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has this pearl of advice for lawmakers eying immigration reform: The measure of border security cannot be reduced to a number.

A quantitative measure of a safe and secure border, however, is what some lawmakers on Capitol Hill have been asking for, to provide proof to Americans that Congress has plugged the nation's borders and won't risk the buildup of millions more illegal immigrants a decade from now.

Moreover, negotiators working to hammer out bipartisan legislation on immigration reform are expected to make any change in the status of illegal immigrants --- of which there are at least 10 million --- contingent upon improvements in border security. So, unless Congress or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) comes up with a way to measure progress toward securing the border, the fate of the undocumented could twist in the wind, satisfying neither those who are concerned about border security nor those who want to bring people out of the shadows. This sticking point of how to measure border security could unravel the entire reform bill.

Glenn Spencer -- American Border Patrol

Two years ago, Richard Stana of the GAO said we needed to know how many people we miss --- the denominator.

After four years, I came up with a way to get at that denominator --- it is called the Sonic Barrier. It works, but can I get anyone to listen to me? No.

My Congressman, Ron Barber, is the ranking member of an important border subcommittee. His Sierra Vista office is 30 minutes from our border ranch. After numerous invitations to visit us, we have heard nothing. They won't even return our phone calls. Why?

1:10 PM -- Glenn Spencer was contacted by a representative of Rep. Barber's office. Glenn says he thanks them so much for their initiative.

Racist White Journalist Jason Fagone Retaliates Against His Own Workplace, Philadelphia Magazine, for Publishing a Somewhat Honest (if Watered-Down) Article on Black Racism—“Being White in Philly”

Jason Fagone is bitter. Jason Fagone is one angry white man. And he will get even!

He has devoted his life to hurting his fellow whites through journalism. And yet, he writes for a media outlet that, he feels, caters to a mainline, white Philadelphia audience. And now, to add insult to injury, that outlet has published a 5,300-word article on race that, far from being solicitous and deferential towards blacks, expresses those attitudes towards “racist” whites!

And to add insult to injury, the outlet, Philadelphia Magazine, refused to reveal the names of the article’s white informants, thus making it difficult for Fagone to track down their employers, and get them fired and whitelisted from their professions, and for “anti-racists,” white and black alike, to hunt them down and brutally beat and/or murder them.

Fortunately for Fagone, however, he works in a business in which employees can get away with being disloyal, as long as it’s the right kind of disloyalty. And so, he is retaliating against his employer, his editor, Tom McGrath, and his colleague and “friend,” Bob Huber, who penned the article, by denying the article legitimacy. He asserts that Huber’s article “doesn’t make sense as journalism,” because Huber protected his interview subjects’ anonymity. That claim is screamingly dishonest on Fagone’s part, but he doesn’t care. He knows that the subjects’ lives would have been instantly destroyed, had their names been published. Indeed, I know of alleged journalists who have contacted the employers of people they hated—
Scott Shane of the New York Times (back when he was with the Baltimore Sun) and Betsy Hammond of Portland’s Oregonian, who have contacted the employers of people they hated for political reasons, in bids to get them fired from their jobs. Shane, Hammond, and Fagone are racial socialists, and thus honesty and integrity are completely foreign terms to them.

At least, Fagone’s editors permitted readers to rip him a new one.

Philly Mag’s “Being White in Philly” Doesn’t Make Sense as Journalism

How do you launch a frank discussion about race under a cloak of anonymity?

Comments  111

The March issue of Philadelphia magazine is unfortunate. I saw the issue late last week. I still have sort of a hard time believing it’s real.

Others have already made powerful arguments about what the cover story gets wrong about race. I just wanted to make a few points about why I think the story—“Being White in Philly”—doesn’t make sense as journalism. That’s my lens, and that’s how I’ve been thinking about it.

The writer, Bob Huber, is a friend of mine. He’s hugely talented and has done an impressive amount of great work, but I think he’s misguided here, and I’ve already emailed him to tell him why. The way I see it, the story is doomed before Bob has a chance to write a single sentence. The framing is that this is a story about “being white.” It’s going to explore race from a single point of view. No black people will be quoted, no Hispanic people, no Asian people. (And they’re not.) This seems fatal to me. All Bob can accomplish within the frame of “being white” is exactly what he does accomplish, which is to chronicle the racial fears of one particular group of people, moving among his sources as a kind of confessor.

I say confessor because the quotes he gathers aren’t on the record. Sources are anonymous, names are changed. I don’t like this. I don’t see how you’re going launch a frank discussion of race—the stated goal of the piece, and a worthy one—under a cloak of anonymity.

Another thing I don’t like: The thrust of the piece seems to be that white people are afraid to talk about race because black people have made them feel uncomfortable talking about race. Therefore we can’t solve problems in the city, because a conversation is impossible. The implication is that this is black people’s fault. Beyond the way this argument turns the reality of racism and segregation on its head, it just baffles me on a practical level: I don’t get why you’d devote 6,000 words or whatever (the story is really long) to explaining why it’s difficult to have a conversation when you could just go and have the conversation.

The story is well-intentioned. It’s an earnest and heartfelt attempt to do a good thing—to get people to talk about something that matters. I know Bob well enough to say that. I also have tremendous respect for Philly Mag editor Tom McGrath, who, to his credit, has given staffers this forum to speak out publicly, which I think says a lot. Part of the reason I’m upset about “Being White in Philly” is that I care about the magazine and how we’re perceived. I’ve written for Philly Mag for a decade now, and I think we’re a lot better and smarter than the caricature of us I often encounter: that we only care about white Main Liners, that we cater to the rich and powerful, and on and on. When I hear this, I always think: Bullshit. You’re not actually reading us. I’m proud of our investigative reporting and narrative writing on gun violence, the police, sex offenders, the Mafia, real estate developers, the pensions crisis, politicians, corrupt neighborhood leaders, union intimidation, and dozens of other important topics. We do good work here. That’s why I dread the moment when the full story goes online. I fear our good work is going to get lost in the criticism. And we’re going to deserve it.

I think the fact that all of the people quoted wanted to be anonymous is a clear indication of what the article is trying to say. People ARE afraid to say anything. It is with some trepidation that I even post this comment.

There is nothing racist about being afraid of Black crime. Predominantly Black crime has made Philly increasingly unsafe. I fear Philly for these reasons.

Why don't people want their name listed? I can give you an idea of why that might be. We all know what happens when a white person says they don't like Obama. They are AUTOMATICALLY labeled a racist because there is no possible way you cannot like his policies, his cabinet, his ineffectiveness and not be racist. It is baloney. This city has tons of events at the Philadelphia School District that are ONLY for blacks. Why? Don't Latinos need help with SAT's? How about Asians? Why is it that Whites - need not apply? Why not have sessions that are inclusive of ALL students who want to do better? In this town the rhetoric is we want everyone to be the same and the racism to stop - but the reality is, you can't stop racism until everyone is willing move forward. We cannot change the past - we can only direct the future. I'd like to stop seeing color, but I am constantly reminded of it. Groups like the NAACP pull people apart, when we will ever move beyond it? I don't think ever ... Racism is rampant in this city and it is so deep that it runs through the veins of all who come here. You may start off not being a racist, but be rest assured your blood transfusion will begin and it won't take long before this city turns you into one. Very sad. And it should never be, but the facts are that that is how it really is.

I criticize parts of Obama's policies frequently, and I am not afraid to say it. I also think he has done a bunch of good things.
If people are too f-ing stupid to think outside their "black vs. white; left vs. right; lib vs. con" world, then they are idiots. I spend little time worrying about their moronic, ignorant criticisms. The best thing that could ever happen in a subsequent election is for the blathering radicals on both sides to be exposed as worthless. Those fringes have done more damage to the country than Obama ever will.

I think you may have missed the point of my initial comment. It really wasn't about Obama - it was about being automatically called a racist. The statement was used just to illustrate a point regarding racism not to discuss Obama. But I thank you for your comments.

o Hape2b in what way have you been oppressed? You sound as though you are quite possibly a victim of reverse racism. Is that the case? Are you an advocate for those groups outside of african-americans? Are you certain those who speak against Obama and "his" policies aren't racist? Are you racist?. Are you certain that if a student, no matter what ethnicity cannot receive free SAT/ACT if necessary? Are you sure that your analysis is not a bit lazy. It sounds familiar. I'm white, these entitlements to blacks are unfair. Why can't "they" now at this point in time lift themselves up without any help? Perhaps you could use some introspection on your thoughts about blacks in general. Maybe consider how you could walk in the shoes of an African-American for a day. Whether a black colleague, someone black that you know that maybe middle class, God fobid that you take on the challenge of spending a day walking in the shoes of a lower income African-American.

49

hape2b to tony jackson•21 days ago
I am an advocate for all groups not one. There might be some who speak against Obama that are racist, that doesn't mean that everyone automatically is. Obama is half white and half black and I would have hoped he would have been the one to bring the people together instead of dividing them further. Sadly, that didn't happen. Do I think one race is more superior than another? NO. Do I think all races have good and bad? Absolutely. Do I think all races face the same struggles. Absolutely. Do I think that all races are treated the same? Absolutely NOT. I am tired of the jobs being given to people based on quotas, instead of the right person for the job. It is one of the reasons we are surrounded by ineptness. I am POSITIVE that any race other than black can NOT apply for the SAT classes offered that I referred. And there are other classes offered as well that are for blacks only. My analysis is not lazy. It is on point. Apparently you believe that only blacks face opposition and and struggle. I am not opposed to assistance to anyone who needs it and qualifies. I don't base it on race - I base on necessity and need. I have a lot of introspection on the race debate but I thank you for the suggestion. Your reply is the exactly what I am talking about - because I believe all should be equal and no one should be one up and we should all work together for the greater good, I must have an issue or see something wrong. You can't have an altered view or slanted view or maybe we just see it differently - it has to be a racist issue. My family didn't come to this country until the early 1900's, and when they did they suffered tremendous hardships related to ethnicity. They did this so future generations had a better life. Today, I pay for the sins of people who have no affiliation to me whatsoever and will be constantly reminded that I have to make accommodations for people today because of the hardships they faced. When can we move forward? When can there be an acceptance that the past cannot be changed and realization that only the present and future can be altered. You can't change everyone but at some point in time, we have to move on. As for taking a day to walk in the shoes of a black person ... I spent 6 years volunteering my time on a daily basis in the Philadelphia School District. The first 3 years were full time at 30 hours per week and the last 3 were part time averaging 15-20 hours per week. The school has a 98% minority and impoverished population. I think I might have some idea of the plights of minorities, not just blacks. Hopefully, I showed the students and community that not only do I care and want to work together, but I am willing to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. Hardships strike all of us.

Let me first say the comments I’m about to write reflect my own personal opinion and does not reflect any organization I’m affiliated with.
Dear Philly Mag: I have not had a chance to read your latest cover story, but it strikes me as a simple fast way to get publicity plain and simple. You want to get headlines so you can sell the magazine and get interest in the story.
It is my understanding that this month’s magazine has two different covers-- one for home subscribers and the magazine sold on the streets of Philadelphia (the White debate) and a different (less shocking) cover for copies of the magazine available at hotels. If Philly Mag really wants to discuss this issue, you should have kept the same cover for all magazines.
Also, Philadelphia Magazine needs to start covering ALL of Philadelphia and its suburbs, not just a selected demographic of people as you do today. Philly Mag every month makes readers believe that every section of Philadelphia (except for a select few neighborhoods) are full of crime, violence, dysfunctional families and the city is going to hell in a hand basket. All major cities have its share of problems and issues, but we all know a lot of other American cities are doing a lot worse off than Philadelphia.
I believe great media outlets come up with solutions to problems and foster discussion. It is time for Philadelphia Magazine to reflect the greatness of the city.

I am white and disabled. I thought that I knew what it was like to be a minority! How stupid I was! When I lost the ability to walk and could not work, it was shocking. I lived in a very nice community. I lived in a domestic violence situation and suffered economically, socially, and psychologically. I had to apply for medicaid, food stamps, and even went to a food bank. I had so-called well to do family.
• I began to see things very differently. These so-called entitlement programs saved my life! It appeared that no one wanted to be in those long and degrading lines. I have to say, I found that I have met many people and I am constantly in awe of people who live in poverty. If white people lived like many urban dwellers would we put up with it? Generations of families were destroyed due to slavery and discrimination.
I think we need to discuss race and culture daily.
I hope this is the evokes some education and dialogue.
Things are better. These times scare me in that much seems to be regressing. I do hope I am mistaken!

With all due respect Ma'am, poor people exist in every race. Blacks, don't corner that market. The differences that you will find are the ways people deal with it, respond to it, and resolve it. Many people in all races will remain in poverty for their entire lives. Others, will break free and change things for the better. It will be a struggle for them to get out because society will work against everything they do - but despite this, they will do it. Maybe the discussion shouldn't be race related but rather poverty related.

Jason, You seem like a decent enough guy, but as Anthony noted above, this statement is laugh out loud funny. The problem with Philadelphia Magazine is the very fact that YOU THINK you're better and smarter than the caricature. You aren't even self aware enough to recognize that the Magazine is probably worse than the caricature. There have been stories in this Magazine, in this century, lauding debutante balls. Really? That covered that .01 percent of the Tri State area who even knew they still existed, let alone participated in them.

If you are reading this and you don't know about differences in race, this would be the place to start.
We have all been where you are. You think that race is just a social construct and Blacks and Hispanics perform so poorly compared to Asians and Whites because of their "culture".
The community there is more than welcoming about answering any questions you may have about race. Just be sure to be nice and don't phrase your questions in an aggressive way.

• I was less appalled with this White Eye on the Black Guy article than I was when looking through the food section and coming across Jason Sheehan's rant against St. Patrick's Day, where he draws a bad comparison between TV coverage of St. Patrick's Day at an Irish bar and a suggestion that TV cover MLK Jr. Day at a Church's Fried Chicken.
It's a woefully bad comparison -- there *are* drunken louts celebrating St. Patrick's at Irish bars; I've never seen nor heard of anyone going to a fried chicken place for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
It wasn't just inaccurate, not just stupid, but also wasn't funny, which I assume was the intent. To have both of these pieces in the same issue says a lot. And I don't think it's good.

So only black people smoke pot and commit crimes? Riiiight. The internet is a great tool, but unfortunately it also allows angry racist trolls like yourself to hide and attack and spread your racist ideals. Now if your daughter gets raped and robbed by an Asian person are blacks still to blame. You my dear are the problem. SMH!

MichelleLynn68 to Nikki Star•21 days ago
Actually, the Bronx, around Yankees Stadium, used to be all black and dangerous as all hell, and then the hispanics moved in and many of the blacks have moved out. The area is starting to look better. The hispanics are taking care of the area and they are very family oriented. It's nice. Respect is making a comeback in that area. It would be nice to see that happen in Philadelphia, but the culture will never allow it to happen.
And...it's not only black people who smoke pot and commit crimes. That's not what I said. You're twisting what I say to fit your narrative (no suprised there, typical libtard move) and statistically she's got a much higher chance of being raped or robbed by a black inner-city resident than any other demographic.
Finally, allow me to refresh your memory of what happened in the summer of 2011. There was a rash of flash mobs of black youths from the ghettos of Philadelphia going through Center City, in and around Broad Street. They terrorized people throughout the area, including those sitting outside at restaruants and eating. They stole cell phones off table, pushed people to the ground and punch others in the face. It got so bad that Mayor Nutter had to inforce a curfew and stiff fines to the parents of the BLACK degenerates who terrorized the city. They weren't ASIAN, or HISPANIC, or WHITE. They were BLACK. That's not racist! THAT'S A FACT.

To Quote the Washington Post on the Crime in New York City in 2010:
"The Murder and Non-Negligent Manslaughter arrest population is
similarly distributed. Black arrestees (53.8%) and
Hispanic arrestees (36.4%) account for the majority of Murder
and Non-Negligent Manslaughter arrestees while White arrestees
(7.1%) and Asian/Pacific Islander (2.2%) arrestees account for
the remaining portions of the Murder and Non-Negligent
Manslaughter arrest population."[PDF]
Seeing the news so starkly distressed Capehart. He writes:
"In
short, 95.1 percent of all murder victims and 95.9 percent of all shooting victims in New York City are black or Hispanic. And
90.2 percent of those arrested for murder and 96.7 percent of
those arrested for shooting someone are black and
Hispanic. I don't even know where to begin to describe the
horror I still feel looking at those numbers. But the word
'hunted' comes to mind."
Even worse, blacks completely own the category of interracial elderly rape. I quote the FBI:
Of
all the metrics of black violent crime against whites the sexual
homicide of elderly white women offers the most compelling evidence of
race hatred toward the victim. For starters, the motives of the perp
in any sexual homicide of an elderly woman is pure hatred. His victim
is largely symbolic. His motive is not lust but extreme hatred.
(Special
Agent Mark E. Safarik, a profiler in the Behavioral Analysis Unit at
the FBI Academy, published in the May issue of
the Journal of
Interpersonal Violence)
In closing he said:Based on other reports, Safarik says that there has never been a case
of sexual homicide involving a white offender and an elderly black
victim in modern times. Yet the sexual homicide of elderly white women
by black men is epidemic in comparison.”

White racism is White people fleeing from Blacks.
Black racism is Blacks robbing, beating, raping, and murdering White people that were unable to flee fast enough.
White racism is a mainstay of the government, MSM and the academic
world. Black racism is never addressed by the government, MSM, or the academic world. The classic case is the Duke Rape Hoax.
The government, MSM, and Duke University with the rest of the academic world jumped on young White men spurred on by the incredible
notion that White men rape Black women.
Blacks continuously gripe about White racism. Whites never complain about Black racism.

From my experience, and I think many will agree, there is a greater rate of instilling fear in your children about the other race in the black community than there is in the white community. Most white parents bend over backwards to excoriate their children to never judge based on race. Meanwhile, as we see in life and on CNN's Black in America, many (if not most black parents) teach their children to be prepared for alleged white racism; thus leading many black children to look slanted at whites at an early age. You'll deny this, but deep down you know it's true.

They are very openly racist and loudly shout "white m*f"", "white boy", etc. It is a big joke they laugh about it and derive great pleasure in these racial hate crimes, I have witnessed white women being beaten and pimped-out by blacks. It is horrifyingly out in the open. They really hate white people. They are allied with islamic jihad and black panthers. When I complained, I was called a racist. Read the news almost everyday there is another black on white hate crime that the main stream media tries to cover up. Recently 16 year old white girl, Christina Edkins, on her way to school was stabbed to death in London by a black. This is a genocidal conspiracy by blacks. Deny this and watch your daughters be brutalized, murdered, robbed, raped, and pimped-out by blacks.

“You are so ingrained in your own racism that you cannot even comprehend that every word that you have written oozes with racism.”
Yes it is racism, but it is White racism. White racism is White people trying to get away from Blacks. White racism is just wanting to be with White people. People like themselves.
White racism is building houses, neighborhoods, cities that are White. White racism built the greatest country in the history of the world: America.
Let me give you an example of White racism. You will certainly agree that it is racism to
keep Blacks out of sporting events, both college and professional. It is supposed to be a wonderful event that Jackie Robinson “broke the color line” in MLB.
But is was a disaster. Blacks offer nothing positive to MLB. White people enjoyed the game far more without them. Blacks bring the same negative factors to every sport that they force their way into.
Look what the Blacks have done to basketball, especially the NBA. It is filled with ugly, tattooed, freakish thugs.
White racism is the same as an attractive woman trying to get away from that creepy guy that wants to marry her because she was nice to him. We were nice to Blacks and now they stalk us wanting to live off us.

What have you personally given other races? I'd like to hear that as well. You talk about blacks being entitled but you sound pretty entitled yourself. Also I would love some evidence support your claim that only whites can create a civilized society. And since when have white people been worlds whipping post? do you evidence to support that? Or just more so called "facts" that pulling out of thin air? and exactly what gifts have you given the world? As history will show every ethnic group/nationality that has come in contact with white europeans usually had its culture and society destroyed in an attempt to made to assimilate within the dominant culture. Does that sound like a gift to you? I just have one question maybe you can give me a valid answer maybe not but Why is it that whites always assume that their presence is needed for anothers society to move forward? Or for that matter that their presence is even wanted in the first place? I actually think its refreshing that whites actually want to talk about race for once but unfortunately instead of having a constructive conversation about were just falling into the same old tired stereotypes and that doesn't do anyone any good. Oh and one more point please stop trying to use white guilt no one actually cares if you have that guilt on you then thats your own personal problem quite frankly cause it in no way shape or form benefits me trying to get ahead in life. • What I dislike about this article and the comments that follow it is that the behavior described is attributed to "being black" instead of "being poor", "being uneducated", or "being trapped in a system that is nearly impossible to break out of". Black people, Hispanic people, Asian people, and dare I say White people sit on corners in different parts of this city smoking weed, committing crimes, dealing drugs, and stealing poor pumpkins and lawn chairs. [ Walk around some parts of Philly and your just as likely to a white girl in her pajamas pulling her two year old yelling at her baby daddy on the phone on her way to cash in her food stamps as a black girl] This article is slapped together as a race relations piece when the real discussion should have been the socio-economic gap in our city. Many of the differences between being black and white in his piece is that the people who he interviews are "law students who drive BMW's" who clearly are affected by how poor people act and the closest disadvantage poor people they see and interact with are black. The writer of the article fails and missed the opportunity to acknowledge that the socio-ecomonic gap is the real reason for the behaviors associated with "being black" rather the actual color of the persons skin. Poor people act this way, uneducated people act this way, people who are born in a system destined for their failure act this way. Not black people-- and that is why I take offense.

136

ms_anthro to Melissa•21 days ago

 The studies show that the difference in white and black conviction rates vanishes when juries contain at least one black juror. I'd say that's a pretty strong indicator that racial factors play a big part in conviction rates. But you'd probably see it as evidence of black thug jurors intimidating poor white jurors into letting criminals back on the streets. Because white people are the most persecuted people in America, aren't they.
 59

ms_anthro to Leah Doner•21 days ago
What a weird and rambling nonresponse. That, or black jurors make for hung juries and mistrials, also a documented possibility.
Your last sentence is sheer projection. We don't feel persecuted, but taken for granted, ethnically cleansed, looted and pillaged, and displaced from the cities our ancestors built for us, menaced by violent criminals who live on our backs from cradle to grave, sneered at by ivory tower intellectuals who live in lily-white gated communities and doorman buildings and shriek about tolerance to working and middle class whites who actually have to live in the trenches of Diversity.

Now, in which majority-black neighborhoods in Philadelphia does a peaceable white person risk his very life just entering after dark?

Forget the "frank discussion" you want to have around race, what about a frank discussion on unemployment and poverty that has plagued city residents for years? I grew up in that neighborhood, and yes their are good people and bad people. But I ask you and your paper, outside of flaming racial tensions, how is this "frank discussion about race" helping the people of Philadelphia? In my opinion, with a "cloak of
• anonymity" or not, this is irresponsible journalism at it's best and race baiting at it's worst.

Maybe if your people learned how to behave we wouldn't have all the problems we have. Oh wait, I bet all your problems are the white man's fault!

Being poor and unemployed is the direct result of being involved in gangs, lack of education, drugs, and out of wedlock births. In this age of diversity, a black
can get into any college they so desire, so long as they have a heartbeat and\ score at least 800 on their SATs. Being a member of diversity will take care of
the rest.
If your people are poor and unemployed, then perhaps they should look in the mirror. White America is tired of subsidizing your failure. How is that for a "frank"discussion!

It is racist to talk about race so that makes Fagone appear a bit racist by commenting on it, but we know he is to liberal to be a racist. He has a black friend too.(His black friend finds him rather annoying).

Are you serious? The only way for white people to have an honest conversation about race is to have the shield of anonymity.
In case you hadn't noticed, any opinion about race that might offend black people is considered "racist," regardless of its truth. And: the scarlet letter of "Racist" is a surefire ticket to the end of a career in public life. That's why you can't "just go and have the conversation."

We can't have an honest conversation about race because a really honest conversation about race would include the latest scientific findings that prove beyond all doubt that we are not "the same", and that black violent crime, black impulsiveness, and black low intelligence have a largely genetic basis. That is absolute heresy to white liberal dogma. "Celebrate diversity™", say the liberals, just don't you dare point out any of the very real actual DIFFERENCES.

1) the article was about White people's feelings, not blacks, Hispanics or Asians, therefore their opinions were not needed.
2) White's fears must be addressed anonymously, otherwise they will be attacked and loose their jobs.
3)
blacks have made frank discussions about race impossible because any
mention of black society's dis-functionalism, and they are the most
dysfunctional identifiable group in the nation, is considered racism,
regardless of how true the comments are.
4) Whites are
disproportionately the victims of hate crimes by blacks, although the
government won't prosecute them as such. Eric Holder Obama's AG, said we don't have civil rights protections. They have little to fear from
us, we have MUCH to fear from them.
5) Mr. Fagone, get off your disingenuous white liberal pedestal and join the real world the rest of us have to live in.

How many white people did Soledad O'Brien interview for her "Being Black in America" series?
Do you think this author, Jason Fagone, had similar reservations about CNN's single race perspective?

But being White we aren't allowed to talk about how we feel about race.
We must always contact the Wise Latina or the Streetsmart Black to validate what we say.

Enough of this nonsense and whining about who the author interviewed and who he didn't. Most of us don't need interviews. We just need to read the stats which point out the racial truth of why these Philly neighborhoods and others all over the country have gone to seed. Another disingenuous White liberal who cries racist when another White has the cojones to say the truth about race.

"I fear our good work [journalism at Philly Mag] is going to get lost in the criticism"
hehe, After all this 'hard work', Philly must be a vibrant, wonderful place to live. Too funny! Always there to take credit! I usually don't make comments like this, but the picture kinda makes the author look like a doofus.

Why do you say the article is "unfortunate"? What's "unfortunate" about it? I read Huber's article. There's nothing wrong with it. Then you go on to say you, "can't believe it's real". Why not?
Then you say Huber is "a friend" and "talented", but you think he is "misguided". And the story wasn't "framed correctly". Oh really? How? Why?
Is there something "wrong" with being white, in your opinion? You believe it's "wrong" to "frame" an article and write it from a white perspective. Why?

Birmingham, Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, Jackson, St Louis (and many more)
High crime, violence, gangs, murder, shootings, rape, assault, black on white racism, black on white violence, black on white crime, low education standards, low test scores, crumbling infrastructure, shocking graduate rates, high unemployment, high welfare levels.
Now please white liberals, Marxists, non-whites, and the author of this article:
• Please tell me who is to blame for these specific issues in these cities and towns? Is it the 'white man' and his 'wicked racist ways', or is it the black people who are the ones responsible for these things and the causes of the problems these places have?
Why has South Africa fallen apart without whites running it and with whites fleeing it like the plague? Why has Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) turned from a prosperous, first world African nation into a third world hellhole since the 'racist whites' were forced from power and off land? Why is it that EVERY SINGLE black majority town, city, state and nation on the face of the planet have the EXACT same problems with crime, violence, rape, murder, gangs, poverty etc?
Why is a nation like Liberia, which whites have never colonised or ran, which has been ran and lived on by blacks for hundreds of years now, a third world hellhole just like most of Africa?
We all know the answer. All of us.
