Seattle Bus Tunnel Beating: 15-Year-Old Girl Viciously Attacked, Guards Watched
By Edecio Martinez

SEATTLE (CBS/AP) Surveillance cameras captured the brutal beating of a 15-year-old girl in a downtown Seattle bus tunnel while three security guards watched without ever intervening.

The guards' actions during the Jan. 28 brutal attack prompted an outcry from Metro Transit and King County authorities, who said they wished the guards had broken up the fight even though they were just following orders not to interfere.

Police arrived minutes after the attack, and after the group had fled. Police tracked down four suspects, including the alleged attacker, another 15-year-old girl, and arrested them on Friday and Saturday. All four were charged with first-degree robbery for theft of a purse, phone, and iPod.

In court papers filed Wednesday, the victim told authorities she deliberately stood next to the three guards and thought they would protect her.

Surveillance video first aired by Seattle's KING-TV this week shows the attack at Westlake Station on Jan. 28. The victim appears several seconds before her attackers and sidles up to the three guards, who are standing together and talking.

A teen girl shoves the victim and begins punching her. The two crash into a wall and then onto the floor. The assailant gets up and kicks and stomps on the girl's head. Others grab her possessions.

The guards, who have standing orders to "observe and report," called police.

The 15-year-old victim, who reported that she lost consciousness during the attack, was not hospitalized but did see a doctor.

King County Sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart said the guards were right to follow their training.

"If you're a bank teller and you do something other than give them the money, you're going to get fired," Urquhart said. "We don't expect civilians to take police action. In this case, it was a violent fight, and they were outnumbered by this pack of people 3-to-1."

The guards' duties include helping customers and reporting suspicious objects, disruptive behavior and equipment problems.

The girl charged as the primary attacker faces up to 2? [N.S.: The question mark was left in by a CBS staffer; apparently, CBS doesn’t have editors, let alone fact-checkers] years in juvenile detention if convicted. The three male suspects face from 31 months to four years in prison if convicted.

[N.S.: Here are comments that are heavily censored, while at the same time the censors permitted a whopper to stand. CBS also refused to do any digging, which the following blogger, Scott St. Clair, did.]

WA State Legislature considering bill to deny public access to videos (like the tunnel beating) + black beating victim was class B felon.

Live Leak

By now, anyone who isn't living under a rock has seen the video of a young girl getting savagely beaten in Seattle's Metro Bus Tunnel [N.S.: on January 28, 2010] . What makes this even more despicable is the fact that three uniformed security guards stood by and watched the whole thing and did absolutely nothing to stop it.

Just in case you haven't seen it, here's the clip together with commentary from KING 5 News:

[N.S.: Video had been removed; I tracked it down, and posted it near the top of the page. A more complete version, for which I couldn’t find the embed, is posted Live Leak here.]

Adding insult to injury, the Washington State Legislature now has under consideration a bill to deny public access to a video such as this. While the bill does say that the news media can get access to it, the general public will be aced out.

Thanks to our friends at the Washington Coalition for Open Government for alerting us to this travesty.

The bill is currently in the Senate as Senate Bill 6431. It's sponsored by Senators Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island; Dan Swecker, R-Rochester; Kievin Ranker, D-San Juan Island; Jean Berkey, D-Everett; Rodney Tom, D-Medina and Paull Shin, D-Edmonds.

Apparently this bunch doesn't believe in transparency and the people's right to know. If they want to hide something like this video, what else would they like to hide?

How this can be considered to be in the public interest is beyond imagination. The interests it does further are those of public agencies who do a lousy job of providing a safe and secure environment for the public - they benefit because the evidence that shows them up will now be hid from view. It's not a stretch to call this a pre-emptive cover up.

The sponsers of this measure should be ashamed of themselves. Washington state has enough trouble on its plate - a budget crisis, trampling on the will of the people when it comes to tax increases, floating a punitive death tax and a job-killing increase in the sales tax - without giving the public another kick in the teeth.

Frankly, this reporter sees the move as further evidence that the Olympiacrats stopped representing the people a long time ago. They represent themselves, government agencies and public employees. The people serve only to be their field hands working the plantation to provide them with the good life.

Bus tunnel beating victim's background
For days we've been hearing about the innocent victim of the beating in the Seattle bus tunnel.

Aiesha Stewart-Baker gave a tearful press conference Friday afternoon. And she flew to New York this weekend with James Bible from the NAACP to appear in studio on Good Morning America. In that interview, Bible said they are definitely considering a lawsuit against the taxpayers for what went down with Aiesha in the bus tunnel.

But, on Good Morning America, Aiesha and her mom wouldn't give their last name. I believe I now know why. I followed up on a tip from a listener and have uncovered a rather extensive criminal background for young Aiesha.

She has been charged with Attempted Robbery in the 2nd Degree - a Class-B felony - in both King and Snohomish Counties. From the charging papers in the King County case: On January 26, 2009 (when Aiesha was 14), Aiesha and a friend went into a market on Rainier Ave. S. at 10:30pm.

A security guard saw the friend shoplifting - and when he detained the friend, Aiesha started punching the guard with a closed fist in the head and face.

Aiesha received a deferred disposition - which means it would have been expunged from her record if she had kept her nose clean.

But since then, Aiesha has racked up another second-degree robbery charge in Snohomish County. This one for for purse-snatching. She is due to appear in court on the 22nd of this month on that charge. If convicted, it would presumably reinstate the King County case.

On May 23rd, 2009 at 12:20am - Aiesha and a friend approached a woman walking on Highway-99 in Edmonds. According to the Snohomish County charging papers, Aiesha and her friend attacked the woman and pushed her to the ground. The victim told police that Aiesha and her friend hit her in the head and face. Aiesha and her friend forceably took the woman's purse.

See a pattern here?

Maybe the reason trouble always seems to find our poor innocent 15-year-old bus tunnel "victim" is because she is always seeking out trouble.

Something to keep in mind as Aiesha, her mom, and her attorney are laying the groundwork for a big payday from the taxpayers of this region.

15-Year-Old Gets Kicks To The Head While Guards Watch In Seattle!

Live Leak

SEATTLE - Three security guards watched a group of teens punch, kick and rob a 15-year-old girl in the downtown Seattle Metro bus tunnel without intervening.

Security video shows the guards call for help on their radios, but they don't go to the aid of the girl even as she is being kicked in the head.

Metro Chief "extremely troubled" by bus tunnel beating

Metro Transit is taking a hard look at the policies involving its unarmed security guards in the wake of a beating last month that the guards didn't lift a finger to stop.

The incident in the Westlake transit tunnel on January 28th was caught on video and shows a fight between a group of teens and a 15 year-old girl. Two uniformed Metro security guards are standing right there but did not get involved as the teenage girl is thrown to the ground and punched and kicked in the head repeatedly by another teen.

According to Metro, security policy guards aren't allowed to intervene in assaults, but rather are directed to contact law enforcement.

• Security should provide security. If you're just there to observe, they should call them "Observers"
